hybrid research spaces
essay

In my thesis, I explore hybrid research environments and the intersections of biology, design, and art. My research is based on the premise that traditional, isolated disciplines are no longer capable of providing adequate solutions to contemporary global challenges; instead, greater collaboration is needed through interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches. My purpose is to argue that, in this globalized world, design and art are no longer merely aesthetic or communicative tools, but rather independent forms of knowledge that play a key role in the social and cultural reinterpretation of thinking about biology. I have structured my thesis into two main sections: a theoretical and historical contextualization and an analysis of international case studies.

Modern education and public discourse are still dominated by the artificial division of the “two cultures” described by C. P. Snow: a rigid split between the humanities and the natural sciences. At the same time, higher education and the design sector are dominated by neoliberal market logic, which seeks to transform knowledge exclusively into a profitable, measurable product, thereby making genuine experimentation impossible. My thesis attempts to articulate a theoretical and practical “third space” where the objectivity of science and the critical subjectivity of art converge.
The theoretical framework is provided by the historical context of interdisciplinary thinking, as well as by a presentation of various inter- and transdisciplinary models. I explore the role of design and art as research tools through the work of theorists such as Christopher Frayling, Graeme Sullivan, and Ilpo Koskinen.

In the second chapter, I use international case studies to present the spectrum of institutional and methodological approaches in contemporary transdisciplinary practices. The analysis presents the cutting-edge academic technology of the MIT Media Lab and Neri Oxman’s pioneering material-ecological model, the speculative future scenarios of the Superflux studio operating within a market context, the open laboratory of Ars Electronica that generates social dialogue, and the community-based biohacker movement of Genspace. My goal is to map out a broad spectrum that examines these collaborations from various perspectives.
A dolgozat amellett érvel,

The study concludes that research through design can bridge the gap between rigid scientific models and complex social reality. The local adaptation of the international patterns and hybrid models examined could also initiate the democratization of scientific discourse in the domestic context. The thesis argues that, despite limited infrastructure, small-scale university courses, programs, and workshops can create “third spaces” in Hungary that deconstruct elitist academic structures, opening the way toward a more horizontal, sustainable, and just vision of the future
A dolgozat kifejezett kritikai szándéka azonban az, hogy ne csupán bemutassa, hanem elemzés alá is vesse ezeket az együttműködéseket: rámutatva a felsőoktatást és a designt domináló neoliberális piaci logikára, amely a sandbox-jellegű kísérletezést gyakran kiüresíti, és a hangzatos „innováció” címszó alatt a tudást pusztán profitábilis termékké formálja.
However, the stated critical intent of this paper is not merely to present these collaborations but also to subject them to analysis: highlighting the neoliberal market logic that dominates higher education and design, which often renders sandbox-style experimentation meaningless and, under the buzzword “innovation,” transforms knowledge into nothing more than a profitable product.
